Our Ethos
Welcome to the EAL Department. We are here to help anyone who has moved here from a new country and wants to learn English and get to know how the English system works.
We believe in a multi-lingual, multi-cultural society, where different languages are used to communicate on a daily basis. We want you to do well at Mayfield School and celebrate your achievements.
At Mayfield, there are lots of opportunities for you to get involved. We also offer classes to support you with your English learning so you are ready for GCSEs.
Our team is here to help you get settled into life at Mayfield. We will introduce you to the staff you need to know, help you understand how to access resources at school and meet other students who have been in a similar situation like you!

EAL Provision
Students who have arrived at Mayfield from abroad and whose first language is not English are given the opportunity to attend intervention groups led by EAL specialist teachers.
We are guided by Bell Foundation Assessment Framework for UK Secondary schools and EAL STAR Assessment to assess our new students and decide which class they go into.
Students who need our support will spend their first day with us in our main classroom, I6. Here they will write a letter to their new teachers, complete a simple Reading and Listening Assessment in English and connect with their new school community. Their buddy will give them a tour of the school, introduce them to their form class and introduce them to their friends at break and lunch.
