Team Supreme wins "Entrepreneur Award" for work with WOHAA
Posted on: 01/07/2019In one of Mayfield's BTEC Business Classes Daroush, Abdi, Sufyian, Kamile, Hamza, and Sameha formed Team Supreme. Throughout the year they put on events such as a Halloween Party, a Krispy Kreme doughnut sale, a Trainer raffle, a Bungee Jump, and a Valentine's Day rose sale; they made £1,083 and donated every single penny to the ‘Wings Of Hope’ international children's charity.
On Wednesday 26th June 2019, the Wings of Hope celebrated the end of WOHAA 2018-19 with its Annual Awards Ceremony, held at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
WOHAA participants from schools across London, Liverpool and even Geneva were present at this wonderful evening.
The celebrations kicked off in style with a dance showcase from Pineapple Dance, who then led the crowd back up to the beautiful Nuffield Hall where the Ceremony took place. After an introduction to the beginnings of the charity, Dr Sri Ram, one of the co-founders of the Wings of Hope, praised the current students for being ‘the light in the darkness’ with all their efforts and achievements of the past fourteen years of WOHAA.
Hosted by Smruti Sriram, each Award presentation was given by a guest presenter. We were honoured to welcome Professor Shivakumar from London Business School, Damon Clarke ex-CEO of digital marketing company Brandwidth, Praful Nargund the Managing Director of Create Fertility, as well as the music sensation Arjun, to present Awards to our students.
These were interspersed with performances from within our student body, including Luke and Saskia from JFS who performed a duet on the guitar and piano which had everybody clapping along, Ishika from the Henrietta Barnett School who performed a moving rendition of Bob Dylan’s Blowing in the Wind, not to mention a K-pop-inspired dance number from Zaynah, Shanice, and Noushin from Brampton Manor Academy, and an original poem written by Amy from Dartford Grammar.
We were also delighted to welcome back a WOHAA alumnus Abhinav, who presented our newest Award for Exemplary Teams, as well as performing a funky free-style dance.
Another high point of the night was presenting our Best Teacher Award for WOHAA 2018-19, which this year went to Naomi Colman from the Henrietta Barnett School for her work in coordinating 9 WOHAA teams!
After presenting Awards in the categories of Community Action, Entrepreneurship, Raising Awareness, Presentation, Excellence in Sports and the Arts, and for the Most Funds Raised, we were thrilled to announce the Overall Runners Up for WOHAA 2018-19 as Beats 4 Hope from the International School of Geneva, who ran a 7-hour drum marathon! To close the evening, Rajni the Wings of Hope Co-founder had the great pleasure of announcing that the Overall Winning team for WOHAA 2018-19 was Celestial, from West Kirby Grammar School. This amazing team ran a ‘Battle of the Bands’ scheme, which included training complete beginners in various instruments, forming them into bands, and putting on a concert for 150+ guests to see them perform and ‘battle’ it out, where team Celestial themselves also showcased their own musical talents! This team will be going on the once-in-a-lifetime expenses-paid trip to see our work in action in India, and to see for themselves what a difference they have made. Big congratulations to both Beats 4 Hope and Celestial!
